Going Green

Recycling scrap metal in the United States dates back to the revolutionary war where colonist would find used shot and re-melt the lead back into new shot in order to win our independence. Today, the scrap metal industry is high tech, and it employs over 130,000 men and women across our great country. At Metalink, we are committed to keeping our landfills and countryside clean of end of life metal products and industrial scrap metal generated by our manufacturing sector. The scrap metal industry also plays a key part in trade balance by exporting billions of dollars of goods to over 158 countries world wide. Metalink is making a difference by being a part of this great industry. For each pound of non-ferrous and every gross ton of ferrous scrap metal we manage plays a major role in keeping our resources for future generations.

The United States recycles the following amounts of product each year:

  • Over 88 million metric tons or 197.12 billion lbs of scrap metal is recycled each year.
  • The USA recycles over 80 million gross tons of ferrous scrap. That would equate to over 9,000 Eiffel Towers built within one year.
  • Within one year the USA recycles enough copper to build 26,000 Statues of Liberty.
  • If all of the aluminum recycled in the United States was used to produce beverage cans, we could stack them on top of one another and that would stretch to over 25 million miles, the distance from the earth to Venus.
  • A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the shelf in as little as 60 days.
  • CO2 emissions are reduced by 60%.
  • Recycling one car saves more than 2500 lbs of iron ore, 1400 lbs of coal and 120 lbs of limestone (over 14 to 16 million cars and trucks are recycled each year).
